East Midlands Counties League
Final Score Clipstone FC 1 West Bridgford FC 4
West Bridgford made a perfect start to their East Midlands Counties Campaign today away to Clipstone FC, winning 4-1 in a one-sided encounter.
Bridgford were immediately on the front foot and spent the early stages camped in the Clipstone half. On 5 minutes a brilliant outswinging cross from Ellis Williamson found John Whitehurst at the far post and he placed his header beyond the Clipstone keeper to give Bridgford the lead and a great start to their season.
Bridgford continued to dominate proceedings with Callum Lloyd and Jordan Wheatley pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch. On 28 minutes another excellent cross from Williamson found Hopkinson, who expertly took the ball on his chest, before volleying past the keeper to double Bridgford’s lead.
Ten minutes later and Hopkinson was on hand again to double his tally and extend Bridgford’s lead to three. This time he found space in the box and was unmarked to power his header home Jordan Wheatley’s cross from the left.

The second half was played at a slower pace, as would be expected in a season opener. The exception to this was a goal of great quality on 55 minutes that put the outcome of the game beyond doubt. Great trickery on the left from Josh Rae found Jordan Wheatley in space, his pinpoint cross to the middle was met by the head of last season’s top scorer Ryan Whitehurst, who opened his account in style, heading past the stranded keeper.
Clipstone pulled a consolation goal back when a break down the left found William Whitehead in behind the Bridgford defence, but in truth, the result was settled in the first half.
There were a number of positives for Ryan Doherty’s men. The debut of Lee Stevenson in defence who looked strong and assured, the two 19 year old full backs, Ellis Williamson and Ryan Wheatley both put in near faultless performances and the attacking options of Hopkinson, Rae, Oldham and the Whitehurst brothers look as though they will cause a lot of teams a lot of problems this season.
An excellent opener to the season for Bridgford. Attention now turns to next Saturday’s game away to Kimberley Miners Welfare where we will be looking for more of the same.
