Framework to hold Big Sleep Out at The City Ground

Framework are holding the Big Sleep Out 2018 at The City Ground on Saturday 24th November 2018.

Why get involved?

Rough sleeping is at its highest since the 1990s – with more than 40 people sleeping rough on Nottingham’s city streets alone. Taking part in Framework’s flagship fundraising event is a great way to show you care, learn more and raise vital funds. All funds raised go to tackle rough sleeping in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

It’s a chance for you to challenge yourself and gain a small insight into what it is like for rough sleepers, for whom sleeping outdoors is not a one-off experience.

As always there will be fun activities and great entertainment in store whilst preparing for the night ahead. Prizes will be on hand for the most spectacular cardboard shelters.

How to get involved

We ask all participants to raise a minimum of £50. Securing your place requires a small payment – a non-refundable £10 fee for adults and £5 for people aged 5-15 years.

People under 16 cannot take part individually; responsible adults must complete registration for minors via the form online.

Charity gig at the Britannia Boat Club

The Britannia Boat Club on Trent Bridge hosts it’s annual charity gig this Saturday (29th November). The Terminal Five Experience will take to the stage around 10pm and will be supported by Fraud Squad (8.30pm).

Doors open at 7.30pm and entrance costs £7.50. The gig is in support of School for Parents, the Trent Academies Group, Maggies and Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. For tickets contact terminalfiveexperience@ntlworld.com or call 0781 3331901.

West Bridgford dads to complete three peaks challenge in memory of friend

On waking on the morning of July 11th 2012, I checked my phone for any new messages that had come through during the night.

I was expecting some work related news – but was not prepared for the most profoundly brave and emotional text I have ever received. Nor am I, or the four other friends who woke in similar fashion to read the message that morning, ever likely to receive one of its kind again.

Our friend Tony Walshe had battled with a particularly rare and aggressive form of cancer called synovial sarcoma for nearly a year and, feeling that his life was coming to an end, wanted to pass on several messages to us whilst he had the chance to do so.

I won’t divulge the exact contents of the text; that will remain private.

Suffice to say that the recurring theme of Tony’s last thoughts were of love for his family and happiness at the times he had spent with them. Tony passed away the following morning, just 40 years of age and having led a previously fit and healthy life.

At Tony’s funeral, we discovered from his family that before moving to West Bridgford he held a deep passion for hill walking. It seemed appropriate that to remember Tony for his bravery in illness and camaraderie with us in life, we should embark on a challenge in keeping with his interests.

We decided to undertake the Three Peaks Challenge in July of this year, on the anniversary of his passing, July 12th.

Our only remaining issue (apart from the usual fitness challenges that this will represent for a group of forty-somethings with an interest in beer and curry), was which charity to raise money for.

We eventually decided on the Willow Foundation. They provide special days for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds and their families, offering a break from the realities of their diagnosis and treatment. For Tony, they provided positive memories that were of comfort to him in his final weeks and that his family will cherish forever.

We are proud to sponsor this charity and in so doing remember our great friend, Tony.

Air Ambulance to open new shop

Your local Air Ambulance, the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, is opening a new Charity Shop just off Trent Bridge in West Bridgford to raise funds to help save lives in our communities and volunteers are urgently needed to run it.

The shop is a large, newly built premises and will sell furniture, lighting, pictures and other household goods. LNAA Nottingham Shop Coordinator, Cadi Lambert, has grand plans for the shop. “This is the first time we have gone into the furnishing market and the emphasis will be on top quality goods” said Cadi. “We are planning the layout to look like a true Furniture Showroom with only the very best of donated furniture and household items being offered for sale. Delivery can also be arranged for a small fee to cover the cost of fuel and staff time. Any donations of furniture and household items to sell in the shop will be welcome and if items are large I can arrange collection free of charge”.

It is hoped the new shop will be open in early April but that is dependent on people coming forward to volunteer their help in the shop. “All Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance shops are run by volunteers and that means the profits go directly to our service” commented Lynn Jones, Nottinghamshire Volunteer Coordinator. “For a shop of this size we will need about 30 volunteers and hope the people of West Bridgford and surrounding areas will come forward and donate their time, maybe a day or even a few hours a week, to help make this shop the success it deserves to be”.

The helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year airlifting people of all ages including babies and young children. Averaging 4 missions a day, they attend everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. The helicopter is kitted out with the latest medical equipment and carries two highly trained flight paramedics and often a volunteer Doctor as well.

Each year it costs the Charity £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and with no Government or Lottery funding it relies on donations of money, goods and time from the people of Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire to keep the helicopter operational.

“Our volunteers are highly valued members of our team and their contribution is vital in helping raise the necessary funds to keep the helicopter operational. If you are interested in volunteering at the new shop please do get in touch” added Lynn.
