BBC’s Maurice Flynn To Open Lady Bay Open Gardens

BBC’s Maurice Flynn will formally open this year’s Lady Bay Open Gardens at 22 Pierrepont Road at 2pm this Saturday (8th July).

The Open Gardens event, now in its 26th year will run from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of July in 25 gardens throughout Lady Bay in West Bridgford.  Maurice, who presents the news on BBC East Midlands TV, has a big love for gardening and trained in horticulture at Pershore College in Worcestershire.

As well as the many beautiful and varied gardens to view there will be lots of entertainment, activities for children, cake and plant stalls.  All money raised over the weekend will be donated to Lady Bay Community Fund and various charities nominated by garden owners.  The brand new Scout Hall will also be formally opened at 1.45pm on Sunday 9 July with Scouts and civic dignitaries in attendance.

Visitors can buy an Open Gardens entry programme for £3 from any participating garden, look out for the yellow balloons and various signs throughout Lady Bay.  An Open Gardens map will be situated outside the Post Office on Trent Boulevard.

Keith Wright, Chairman of the volunteer Open Gardens committee said “this year promises to be another fabulous weekend not to missed! We have 25 gardens taking part and lots of entertainment and stalls for all the family”.

Confirmed entertainment over the weekend includes: The Trent Navigation Shanty Crew, The Community Choir, The Strawberry Jammers, The Black Peacock Belly Dancers, Kids Zumba demonstration, Tripliquette (vocalist trio) and live singers, City Farm animal petting at The Lady Bay Pub, Cream Teas at  Holme Lodge Leonard Cheshire disability, cakes and coffee at the new Scout Hall as well as plenty of plant stalls, children’s activities and fundraising.

Lady Bay Open Gardens

Lady Bay Open Gardens attracts over 1500 visitors

The 25th Lady Bay Open Gardens was a resounding success with more than 1500 visitors over the two-day event.  A total of 22 gardens of all shapes and sizes took part with families enjoying the hospitably and entertainment.  The event raised £6,782 with all profits being donated to the Lady Bay Community Fund and various charities nominated by garden owners.

Keith Wright the Chairman of the Lady Bay Open Gardens Committee said “It has been a great weekend and a brilliant outcome.  Thank you all so much for all the time and effort that you have put in to make 2016 Open Gardens a huge success.”

“It was a fantastic weekend and the atmosphere inside the beautiful gardens, as well as on the streets in between, was warm and so friendly.  It was great to see changes in the wonderful gardens which have opened for us before, plus get an exciting peek into the gardens which opened for the first time.”

The Open Gardens committee will be holding a post event meeting on Monday 1st August 8pm which is open to anyone considering opening their garden or joining the volunteer committee (email keith.wright48@btinternet.com for details).  The date for next year’s Open Gardens has been set for 8-9 July 2017.

Lady Bay Open Gardens

BBC’s Stuart Dixon to open Lady Bay Open Gardens

We are just a few weeks away from the Lady Bay Open Gardens event on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July 2016.  It has been confirmed that 20 beautiful gardens will be open over the weekend ranging from small cottage gardens to vegetable plots, beautiful roses, herb gardens, wildflower meadows and formal landscaped gardens. All money raised over the weekend will be donated to Lady Bay Community Fund as well as various charities nominated by garden owners.

The event will be formally opened at 2pm on Saturday 2nd July at 260 Rutland Road by BBC Radio Nottingham’s Stuart Dixon.  Those of you who listen to BBC Radio Nottingham will know Stuart is one of the regular gardeners giving advice on Sunday mornings and Thursday afternoons.  In addition, he is a writer, RHS speaker, broadcaster, retired horticultural lecturer and David Austin rose expert!

There will be plenty of entertainment and wonderful refreshments over the two days including belly dancers at 24 Fleeman Grove on Saturday at 2.30pm and 4.30pm.  The Trent Navigation Company Shanty Crew are also back and will be performing at 224 Rutland Road throughout Sunday.  The Lady Bay Choir will be ‘flash mobbing’ on Sunday in various gardens and the event has a new addition this year – the Strawberry Jammers band will be performing at 131 Holme Road.

Local historian and resident Peter Hammond will be leading an interesting and informative Historical Walk around Lady Bay on Sunday, meeting 7pm at the Post Office, Trent Boulevard for a small charge of £3 per adult.  Email Peter on peterperambulations@aol.com for more information.

Visitors and garden residents are invited to enter the Miniature Garden Competition which will be running on the Saturday of the Open Gardens weekend.  Entries are to be taken to 2a Seymour Rd in Lady Bay between 10am – 11am on Saturday 2nd July.  Categories include Infants, Juniors, Secondary School Pupils, Groups (eg family, friends) and Adults.
